Two Short Films
(2005, 5:30 minutes, 16mm, BW, Silent/Sound)Two short motion pictures exploring the materiality of 16mm film.
The first film is silent with rapid-fire still images interspersed with abstract textures. The textures were generated by direct application, painting clear leader with watered-down Rapidograph ink. The film was then frozen, and as ice crystals formed on the celluloid, the ink preserved the crystal structures.
The second film incorporates a dual-system magnetic soundtrack. Most of the footage was shot with a Bolex, using a prime lens converted into a macro lens by turning the c-mount adaptor inside-out. Some footage incorporates animated cellular automata photographed off a computer screen.
